Our dog, Doug, has hip dysplasia, which causes him quite a bit of pain at times. One issue for him is jumping up into vehicles whenever he takes a road trip with us; therefore, Michael and I decided to do him a favor and buy him a ramp to get into the vehicle.
Now Doug isn't always excited about new ideas, especially when they involve him, so we decided to take the ramp inside and get him used to it before we tried to get him to just waltz up it into a vehicle. To get Doug used to it, Michael tried to get him to use the ramp to get onto the couch. Michael sat in one seat and I sat in the other. The seat between us is usually Doug's spot.
Michael set the ramp up onto the couch, then called Doug to come up. Doug looked at his spot longingly for a while and whimpered and barked frustratedly, but refused to climb the ramp. We just kept calling him, hoping he would give in. The next thing we knew, Doug had vaulted over the side of the couch, onto my lap, and into his spot. He then lay contentedly down and looked at us in triumph.
Since then, the ramp has been lying in the main traffic way of the living room. We've been trying to get Doug used to it, but, instead of walking over it, which would be easier, Doug jumps around it every time. I've even tried giving Doug treats on it, but he snitches them and runs away.
The stubborn dog! I think getting him to climb the ramp into a vehicle will be a chore.
